Future coating technologies

Surface Defense

Zirconia is developing a new coating technology that extends biologically impervious ceramic protection to all metals, sealed wood, hard plastics and many other hard surfaces.

The ceramic barrier, beyond concrete

CeramycGuard™ has proven that an inorganic ceramic bond can make concrete surfaces biologically impervious, non-porous and resistant to every common agent of decay. Surface Defense applies that same principle to the wider built environment.

The new coating systems will work on all metals, sealed wood, hard plastics and many other surfaces, making them truly non-porous, easy to clean with non-stick ceramic surfaces, and carrying an active antimicrobial barrier.

Development is under way. No launch date is set yet. If your project or facility could benefit, contact us now and our team will reach out when Surface Defense is ready.

Key properties

How Surface Defense protects every hard surface

Truly non-porous

The ceramic surface treatment eliminates surface porosity, the root cause of staining, biofilm adhesion and chemical attack.

Non-stick and easy to clean

A low-energy ceramic surface means contaminants do not anchor. Cleaning time drops and harsh chemical use falls with it.

Active antimicrobial barrier

The coating actively inhibits microbial growth at the surface, a critical property for healthcare, food service and public environments.

Biologically impervious

The same biological imperviousness that defines CeramycGuard™ on concrete is extended to every hard surface in the built environment.

Target surfaces

Where Surface Defense is designed to work

All metals

Steel, aluminum, stainless and coated metals. A non-porous ceramic layer replaces oxidation-prone surfaces with a chemically stable barrier.

Sealed wood

Interior and exterior wood panels, doors and trim. The antimicrobial layer resists biofilm, mold and moisture ingress at the surface.

Hard plastics

Polycarbonate, ABS and composite panels. Easy-to-clean, non-stick ceramic surfaces cut maintenance time and improve hygiene.

Other hard surfaces

Glass, ceramics, laminates and more. If the surface can be prepared, Surface Defense can protect it.
